Spartans embrace underdog role – Houston Chronicle

The Stratford softball team has embraced the role of underdog during the University Interscholastic League Class 5A playoffs. In last week’s 5A-Region III quarterfinals, the Spartans ran into a familiar foe in league rival Tomball Memorial, which claimed the District 19-5A title. Casey noted that a single by senior third baseman Leslie Merchan in the sixth inning gave Stratford confidence heading into the seventh. In the seventh, the Spartans picked up base hits from sophomore right fielder Alex Cole, senior pitcher Jennifer Brann, senior catcher Kate Kopatic, sophomore first baseman Georgia Clark and senior center fielder Elizabeth Brann and a clutch sacrifice fly from senior left fielder Virginia Adkins. Junior second baseman Sam Englund ripped a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning for the first run. […] Harper and Cole added RBI triples in the third and fifth innings to score Jennifer Brann and senior first baseman Kayla Smith, respectively.
