Stratford Recap by Brian Paradis

Stratford Boys Varsity Basketball opened up the Don Coleman Classic Tournament with an 80-52 win over Montgomery.  This game had a fantastic atmosphere as it tipped off at noon on SHS’s home court, which allowed the student section to fill up with a raucous crowd.  In front of their cheering friends and classmates, our team produced a record 25 steals!  Partnered with 17 assists and only 11 turnovers, this was a winning recipe.  Additionally, the team shot 12/18, an incredible 67% from three point range!  Marcellus Freeman 24 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.  Justin Moore 11 points.  Zach Uthman 10 points.  Toni Pavlovic 10 points.  Cash Hodges-Harper 5 points, 5 rebounds.  Josh Chan and Mark Murdock 4 points each.

In their second pool game of the day, Stratford Boys Varsity Basketball fell to the highly-ranked Lamar Texans by a score of 98-86.  Our Spartans opened up on a run to take a 28-25 lead by the end of the 1st quarter, but Lamar stormed back to go back up 49-41 by half.  The team played well on the offensive end, producing 20 assists with only 12 turnovers.  Unfortunately, Lamar was able to get some easy buckets and outrebound our boys on both ends of the floor.  Nevertheless, it was a good test before facing tough district opponents.  Justin Moore 30 points, 9 assists.  Marcellus Freeman 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.  D’Angelo Thomas 7 points.  Daniel Corteguera 6 points.  Noah Paradis 4 points, 4 rebounds.  Mark Murdock 3 points, 5 rebounds.

Stratford Boys Varsity Basketball gutted out a 70-59 comeback win over Klein, who will now be a 15-6A district opponent since SBISD was realigned with KleinISD.  With tight defense and grind-it-out offense to start the game, Stratford fell behind 31-33 by the end of the half.  At the end of 3 quarters, the Spartans were still down 46-48.  Fortunately, our boys were able to open it up and outscore Klein 24-11 in the fourth to get the win.  As a team, 12 assists were dished out, while committing a season low 8 turnovers.  Justin Moore 24 points, 5 assists.  Marcellus Freeman 18 points.  Toni Pavlovic 10 points.  Jayson Roberson 7 points.  Daniel Corteguera 7 points, 4 assists.

Stratford Boys Varsity Basketball faced their second district opponent in two days and came away with their second win, 65-56 over Spring Woods.  The boys shot only 36% from two-point range, but won the game hitting 15/19 free throws for 79% from the charity stripe.  One area for the team to improve in is taking care of the ball, as this game they had only 9 assists compared to 15 turnovers.  Overall, they are improving, and now consistency will be the key.  Justin Moore 16 points, 7 rebounds.  Marcellus Freeman 14 points, 6 rebounds.  Toni Pavlovic 14 points.  Jayson Roberson 13 points.  Daniel Corteguera 5 points.  D’Angelo Thomas 3 points, 6 rebounds.
